How do I choose a heat transfer oil?

There are a lot of heat transfer fluids on the market but not all of them are suitable for the plastics industry. Manufacturers should select a thermal fluid based on its properties, such as thermal stability and heat transfer efficiency, but must also consider the requirements of the system and the end product and the cost of the fluid itself. Synthetic fluids are often a good choice over mineral oils as they typically give up to 8 times the life and will help extend changeout times, especially in electric types of heaters which are commonly used.

What heat transfer regulations should I follow?

When working with thermal fluids at high temperatures, you should follow the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) to keep workers safe. To adhere to these regulations, employers must carry out regular assessments on the fire and explosion risks of any activities involving dangerous substances, including frequent testing and analysis of the condition of thermal fluids. You should always ensure that you efficiently manage risk, keep the site safe and train all staff on efficiently operating a heat transfer system to comply with regulations and provide a safe working environment for all employees.

What other fluids can I use in plastics manufacturing?

Quickpetro also distributes Quicktherm thermal oil for use in plastic, polymer and styrene applications. Quicktherm SH is specified for use in closed loop, forced circulation heat transfer systems and operates efficiently in temperatures ranging from -5 to 350 degrees Celsius. Quicktherm LH is a benzyl aromatic thermal oil recommended for use in temperatures ranging from -30 to 280 degrees Celsius. Quicktherm LH has great thermal stability and can be used for long periods of time without reducing performance.

How long does a thermal fluid last?

All heat transfer fluids will degrade over time. The rate of degradation is heavily influenced by how frequently the fluid is tested and managed in response to the test results and the analysis of the data. The degradation process can lead to the formation of carbon, a natural insulator that builds up in the system. This can lead to a lack of flow or the creation of hotspots, which negatively impacts productivity and increases energy costs. Degradation can also impact fluid viscosity, cause acidic contamination and lead to the formation of light ends that can increase the risk of fire in the presence of an ignition source.

How can I extend fluid life?

Regular thermal fluid analysis can help you to extend the lifespan of your thermal fluid. You should take a closed sample of the fluid every three months to effectively monitor its status. To ensure the sample is representative and the results are accurate, take the sample when the fluid is hot and circulating. By doing this, you can clearly understand what is happening inside the system and if the fluid is beginning to degrade you can also schedule the appropriate maintenance. We can provide a complete thermal fluid sampling and analysis service to help extend fluid life. Engineers will regularly collect representative samples and send it to an accredited laboratory to run eleven approved thermal fluid tests to determine fluid condition. We can then issue a full report on findings and provide recommendations.

How do I maintain the system?

As well as the fluid, it is important to regularly inspect the entire heat transfer system to check the condition of the pipework, pressure gauges, gaskets and seals. Problems with the pipework can cause a leak, which is dangerous for the engineers working on site, and makes the thermal fluid susceptible to ignition if flash points and auto ignition temperatures are reduced and there is an ignition source present.

How can I get help with maintainance?

The best way to maintain a heat transfer system is to implement a preventative maintenance programme. At Quickpetro we provide a condition based thermal fluid lifecycle maintenance programme, Thermocare. Our expert engineers will work with you to improve accuracy when monitoring fluid, provide technical interventions when necessary, organise maintenance schedules and train staff.
